The Guerrilla Sanomat

The Guerrilla Sanomat is an installation hijacking the idea of a newspaper and splattering it with video content from the other end of the continent. The truth, the idea of written word, printed on paper and put to public circulation will get a fresh interpretation and acting as a vessel for presenting and describing actions of the Guerrilla-VJ group.

The word "sanomat" is finnish and means "messages". As a word this has been used in naming newspapers. Helsingin Sanomat being the biggest newspaper in the country. Collective realizing the installation comes from Helsinki and has been as Guerrilla VJ Unit trying to open the dialogue of the use of public space for the people inhabiting it by means of a mobile projection platform, a German army van equipped with battery supplies, beamers, dash of motivation and mediocre map- and street sign reading skills. Armed with these, the urban landscapes have been filled with messages by VJ´s when transported to public spaces by the GVJ Unit.

Installation will bringing these messages back from the street by gathering some documented material from GVJ Unit performances. On one hand this, when combined together with static paper and graphics it creates a frame for a presentation of one subcultural phenomena much like posters and stencils on street. On the other hand it is using an established formal media, the newspaper combined with dynamic video content.
One is presenting old and traditional way of media and messaging while the other one is rather an open format for fast self-expression and documentation. Together they create a dialogue dealing with (messaging in) public space, message inherent objects in public circulation, respect, or valuing, these (as objects) and the content therein. And of course, the right of using and reinterpreting our surroundings and the elements that compose it.
